I have an ancient iPod Nano, one of the tall, thin ones with the click wheel; it’s got a whopping 2GB of storage!!!

Anyway, it plays music just fine. Except it won’t play one of my BBC Radio 1 Essential mixes-which are extremely long single tracks, usually right at 2 hours. This particular track plays fine on my iPhone, played without issue on my Android phone, and works just fine on my PC.

All my music is MP3, and ~320kbps when possible.

Is the issue the file is too large to process? Or something else?

I will attempt loading a different Essential Mix track to see what happens.

EDIT: Tried a different Essential Mix track and it worked. So there is something wrong with that specific file, apparently. :/

It doesn’t help you at all, but my iPod will skip over certain songs 90% of the time and only play them once in a while, sometimes only partially. iTunes is broken.

If it is a truly ancient Ipod nano, you are best off putting custom firmware on it. There are quite a few guides out there for the earlier ones. Then you can directly put music on the device without dealing with itunes and it will have better file support and some other neat features. That was by far the best thing I did with my old ipod nano a few years ago. I also had a 2gb nano so it eventually was just a useless amount of space and android phones were then good enough to just be my music player with expandable storage. Now that I have a 128gb microsd in my current cheapo phone, it is perfect with the PowerAmp app for everything. But anyways, custom firmware is the way to go on the old nanos.

I still use my iPod classic every once in a while. I have a few tracks that do the same thing. I think they are songs that I didn’t properly transfer usage rights to at one point and now they’re forever fucked.

Apple never did manage to get iTunes to work as well as it could have. I have to fight with it all the time. Their logic for how to organize music is completely flawed; whomever decided that making separate folders for every individual track on a compilation album is a fucking moron.

I am not worried about usage rights...cough, cough.

I find my iPhone (on ios9) tends to consume music files to save space, but pretends the file still exists on the phone. Then it won’t let me add more music because it has to add back the files when I sync before it can properly  get rid of them. Or something.

I miss my 3rd gen N ano. It didn’t have a huge amount of space, but it was perfectly pocket sized. I’d likey still be using it if my mom hadn’t picked up a pair of pants off my floor to fill out a load of laundry without consulting me or checking pockets. Somehow it was my fault so it never got replaced.

Deleting and re-adding to your iTunes library usually fixed broken tracks, at least back when I was still using an  iPod
